WE WERE both stunned into silence. He stared at me, holding the side of his face, his eyes wide and unblinking, his mouth open but unspeaking. His shocked expression undoubtedly mirrored mine. I’d never done anything like that. My hand tingled and throbbed unpleasantly. But I shoved the sensation aside.

I was seething mad. In retrospect I probably could have handled the situation better.

But at the time, I basically shouted my head off. “What the fucking hell, Curt? That is such utter bullshit. You don’t get to decide for me if I should love you. And I do love you, you son of a bitch. But no, this is not me being selfish in keeping you alive; this isn’t even me being a loving boyfriend with a sympathetic ear. No, this is me being a decent human being whose life is being ripped apart by the insecurities of the man he adores. I am so mad at you right now. How dare you? How fucking dare you throw away everything you have in a fit of despair—which, knowing you, probably isn’t even the whole damn truth?”

I took a deep breath, not even close to being done. Curt blinked and moved his mouth as if starting to regain his thoughts and ability to speak. But I put up my hand, stopping him before he could so much as let out a squeak.

“I. Am. Not. Done.” I was so furious I shook from the force of my raging emotions. “I know you, Curt. You forget just how well I know you—inside and out. You have a habit of jumping to conclusions, like assuming your siblings would side with your asshole of a dad. You misjudged them. You have a way of keeping secrets, bottling things up till they boil over, and manipulating a situation to avoid confrontations, like you did with your siblings, your best friends—and exactly like you did with me. You misjudged all of us, not just me.”

Curt had gone pale as I went on, and he kept swallowing, if his bobbing Adam’s apple was any indication. His mouth moved, but no sounds emerged. But his gaze never veered away from me. I had his undivided attention.

“But there’s one more thing I know about you, Curt, so you’d better listen up. Since the beginning you have been a perfectionist, and nothing short of absolute flawlessness will do for you. And that should have been your first clue.”

Curt frowned and cocked his head in bafflement. I heard the unasked question.

So I said exactly what was on my mind. “I’m willing to bet all my future earnings that you didn’t even bother to ask any of your teachers or dance masters if you’re really failing your classes or if your skills are truly as subpar as you see them. I’m absolutely certain all that is just a figment of your imagination.”
